Harriet Barney Lidgerwood died Saturday, (May 25, 2002) at Hartford Hospital.
Born March 14, 1925, the daughter of Austin Dunham Barney and Katharine Derr Barney, she was a lifelong resident of Farmington until moving in 1999 to Duncaster in Bloomfield.

Her early education was at the Oxford School and Milton Academy, followed by Vassar College where she spent two years until her marriage in 1944 to Navy Lt. John Pernet King.
At war's end they settled in Farmington, and in ensuing years they had five children.
The couple divorced in 1959, and in 1965, she married William Lidgerwood.

She was always ready to provide a quiet assist to those in need.
She took great satisfaction in her part in creating Greater Hartford Group Homes.
One of the first of its kind in central Connecticut, it provided safe and supervised living for troubled youths.
Following a family tradition, she was energetic in working on behalf of the Farmington Libraries, both as a board member and as an interested supporter and fund-raiser.
As chair of the Civic Projects Committee of the Hartford Garden Club, she worked with city officials to restore the plantings of the Old State House.
She was the first woman to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the Farmington Savings Bank.
She served in that capacity for more than 10 years.
During the last three years of her life, although living in Bloomfield, Hatty never cut her ties to Farmington.

She is survived by her husband, William Lidgerwood; her children, James J. King of Farmington, Virginia P. Bellott of Fayetteville, AR, Katharine L. King of Santa Monica, CA, and Austin D.B. King of Harwinton.
She was predeceased by her son, John P. King, Jr.
Also surviving are her sister, Katharine (Kitsy) Barney Garfield of Princeton, MA and her husband, Wyatt Garfield and their children.

Additionally surviving are her stepdaughters, Graeme L. Dayton of Greenwich and Andrea Guidi di Bagno of Houston, TX.
She leaves her longtime friends and supporters, Linda and Mario Carroccia of Plainville and Josephine Bonini Jensen of Farmington.
