Will of Philip Goode
The 10th day of March 1776
In the name of God Amen; I Philip Goode of South Carolina Granville County being sick in body but good & sound memory thanks be to almighty God. And calling to remembrance the uncertain estate of this transitory life and that all flesh must yield to death when it shall please God to call. Do make constitute ordain and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner & form following revoking and annulling by these presents all & every Testament and Testaments Will and Wills heretofore by me made and declared by either word or writing; and this to be taken only for my last Will and Testament and none other.
And first being penitent and sorry from the bottom of my heart for my sins past most humbly desiring forgiveness for the same I give and commit my soul unto almighty God my saviour and redeemer in whom and by the merits of Jesus Christ I trust and believe assurely to be saved & that my soul with my body at a general day of the resurrection shall arise again with joy; And through the merits of Christs death and passion possess & inherit the kingdom of heaven prepared for his elect and chosen and my body to be buried in such a place where it shall please my executors hereafter named to appoint.
And now for the settling of my temporal estate and such goods, chattels and debts as it has pleased God fare above my defects to bestow upon me I do order give and dispose the same in manner and form following, that is to say I will that all those debts and dues as I owe in right of conscience to any manner of person or persons whatsoever shall be well & truly contented and paid or ordained to be paid within convenient time after my decease by my Executors hereafter named.
First, I lend to my beloved wife Ann Goode my plantation whereon I now live bounding as follows, beginning on Toblers line where my wagon road now crosses it, running thence to a red oak corner formerly belonging to Benjamin Eddings, thence along the dividing line between my two sons Mackness and Samuel to Horns Creek, thence along the creek to said Toblers line. Also my Negro fellow George and all my stock & household furniture during her life.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Mackness Goode all the upper part of my land beginning on Horns Creek above the Lower Spring that is in my old plantation where my crop fence now runs, thence a straight course to a corner red oak formerly belonging to Benjamin Eddings, thence along the line of the land I now live on to my upper line that joins George Mock. Also fifty acres of land that I bought of John Pursell joining the above land. Also my Negro boy Bob to him & his heirs and assigns forever.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Goode my plantation on whereon I now live with the land joining John Clark and Tobler and all my land on the lower side of Horns Creek, the land I run myself and that I bought of John Pursell, also my Negro boy Jeffrey to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Martha Watkins Goode my Negro girl Silve and her increase to her and her heirs & assigns forever.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann my Negro girl Sarah and her increase to her and her heirs & assigns forever.
Item, I give and bequeath unto William Jones and Benjamin Jones a note of hand - on John Walton assigned to me by Jeremiah White of forty pounds sterling to be equally divided between them to them and their heirs and assigns forever and I do likewise appoint my beloved ??????
