Reba Lois Hess, 95, of Palestine, IL, died on November 30, 2020 at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL.

She was born July 26, 1925, in Bellair, IL, the daughter of Wiley & Elzora (Smith) Wiman, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Howard Hess on January 16, 1950, and he preceded her in death on June 17, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her son, Herb Hess; and by her brothers, Howard Wyman and Delno Wiman.

She is survived by her son, Dan & Carla Hess; by her daughter-in-law, Barbara & husband Walt Fritchie; by her special niece, Lynn Bennett; as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Reba grew up in the Bellair area and was a graduate of Oblong High School, where she made many life-long friends. For a time, she taught at the Adams County School south of Palestine, before it consolidated with the Palestine School District. She then began her career as a bookkeeper, and worked for Conrad Implement, Huttons, and finally Ellis Milling Company, where she retired after 15 years of employment. She also donated her bookkeeping experience as well as countless hours of her time to the Palestine Public Library, where she served as treasurer for many years.

It could be said that much of her free time was spent traveling. A young Reba and her family would often take small weekend trips together, and brief excursions such as these would continue to satisfy her wanderlust deep into her twilight years. Back at home, she could often be found nestled in with a novel, as reading was a great source of joy in her life.

Reba Hess will be remembered as a strong, independant soul who lived with wisdom, grace, and a sense of gratitude that continues to remind us that life is what you make it. We are glad that Reba lived a long life, but are even more thankful that her 95 years were filled with real living.

Due to the newly-increased public safety measures being enforced by the State of Illinois, services will be private. Reba will be laid to rest in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
