Henry Giles was born in Ray County, Missouri on 15 June 1845. He was likely born into slavery.

On 30 November 1863, Henry enlisted in the Union Army at Chillicothe, Missouri. He helped fill the ranks of Company A., 62nd Missouri Infantry, U.S. Colored Troops. Henry received his honorable discharge on 01 January 1866. He immediately returned to Ray County where he took up farming.

Henry married Mary Caroline "Carrie" Wilson on 24 February 1878 in Ray County, Missouri. The couple raised a family that included Frank, James, Maud, Isaac, Homer, Charles, and Evalena. By 1897 Carrie had died, and Henry remarried to Belle Turla.

On 24 February 1902, Henry was admitted to one of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He stayed at the home until 28 May 1904 when he was discharged and returned to live on his farm in Ray County.

On 19 September 1913, Henry had apparently been walking to the town of Harden. On that day, he experienced heart failure and died in the road, where a passerby found him.
