While in the military, he met Margaret one day when she went to the river to draw water, he took one look and said "that is the girl I am going to marry" They obtained a marriage license on 3 Oct 1865 in Centerville, Appanoosa County, Iowa and married on 5 Oct 1865, by B.F. Thompson, Minister. Their marriage lasted 52 years and they had 12 children. Margaret lived 17 yrs after William's death and they are buried next to each other in Campground Cemetery.
