Blakely Funeral Home and Crematory obituary

Gaffney, S.C. - With profound sadness we announce the passing of Olen N. Allison, a devoted father and friend to all whose lives he touched. He left this world while sleeping peacefully from natural causes on December 9, 2020 at his daughter's residence in Roebuck, South Carolina. He was in his 87th year.

Born on February 6, 1933 in Gaffney, South Carolina, Olen witnessed incredible changes to the world over the course of his lifetime. Born during the worst year of the depression, with thousands travelling the back roads and rail in America looking for work or a helping hand, he was innately instilled with strength and forbearance. As the decades passed and Olen grew up, war and technology changed lives on a grand scale and improved his and others' quality of life. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army in Korea from 1953 to 1955. He witnessed technology and innovation first-hand during his twenty-four years of dedicated employment at the former Hoechst Celanese, a Fortune 500 global technology and specialty textile materials company.

Described by many as a simple man with a huge heart, he exuded kindness, finding great joy in demonstrating compassion to all; never meeting a stranger. While outwardly quiet, Olen was a strong man who maintained a positive attitude through any challenges placed before him, creating an aura of contentment that put everyone at ease. His children and grandchildren assimilate these same traits as well as his strong work ethic.

The love affairs of Olen were numerous! He loved being outdoors and doing yard work. He loved his lawn mower so much that, in his younger years, he would sometimes mow twice a week. He loved telling stories of his "younger days" to his grandchildren. He loved his Yorkie named Mac-Mac and his Shih Tzu named Daisy. He loved the spiritual comfort he received every Sunday morning for the past several years while listening to Dr. Don Wilton from First Baptist Church, Spartanburg on the television.

But most of all, he loved his family. He was a beloved husband to the late Dorothy Janelle Allison and a devoted father of six children. An expressive man, Olen was never shy about telling his family how much he loved them. He also disciplined them wisely, never when angry, teaching his children the importance of being honest, and was known to actually whistle during a spanking.

Olen was predeceased by his parents, Dee Allison and Lillian Mills Allison, his six brothers and his dearly loved son, Roger McCraw. He is survived in legacy by his sister, Shirley Walker (Bill), of Gaffney, SC; his four daughters Kay Allison O'Shields, of Buffalo, S.C., Gay Allison Bright, of Pacolet, S.C., Sonya Allison Culbreth of Roebuck, S.C.; Starr Allison of the home and his son Lucky Allison (Kim), of Spartanburg, S.C.; eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished with all his heart.

Private graveside services will be held by the family.

The family would like to express special thanks to Griswold Home Care and Brookdale Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cherokee County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2223, Gaffney, S.C. 29342 to honor the memory of this sweet and gentle soul. Online condolences may be expressed through www.blakelyfuneralhome.com
