Hazel Marie Sundell, 93, passed away on December 9, 2020 under the care of Kansas City Hospice House.

Hazel was born on July 8, 1927 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Roy and Mildred (Brown) Bridgeman. She attended the local public schools and met US Navy veteran Doyle Elmer Sundell while at a roller-skating rink. They married on May 21, 1948 and to this union were born four children.

While Doyle worked as a supervisor for Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Hazel was a busy homemaker, engaged in her community and church. Family and church were held in the highest regard. In her later years, she enjoyed playing games like Dominos with neighbors and puzzles and Yahtzee with her grandchildren.
She was an expert in sewing projects and refinishing furniture. In fact, she took it upon herself to stain, repair, and refurbish all the pews at her church in Minneapolis. She served as an elder in Community of Christ and held a variety of leadership roles. As a volunteer, she happily cooked for multiple generations at youth camps and church reunions.

Hazel had a generous and compassionate spirit. She gladly opened her home to whomever stopped by and shared whatever she had to those in need. Her culinary skills were demonstrated when she baked birthday cookies for children at church, sent care package goodies to her grandchildren at college, and whipped up a batch of melt-in-your-mouth homemade fudge and caramels for her family and friends. Her life was abundantly rich with treasured moments surrounded by those she loved. Her beautiful smile and shining personality will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Doyle Sundell; daughter Jeanne Davis, and sisters Loraine Bridgeman and Barb Horman.

Survivors include her three children Val Sundell of Austin, TX, Tom Sundell (wife Gail) of Cheyenne, WY, and Barbara Borkowski (husband Rob) of Independence, MO. She was a proud grandma to eight and loving great-grandma to ten. Her brother Gerald Bridgeman (wife Karen) of Champlain, MN and several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive her.

A private memorial service will take place at a later date. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
