American Politician. He began his political career by running for a Nevada State Senate seat as a Republican in a heavily Democratic Las Vegas area district. He went on to win that race and served the district from 1967 to 1975. In 1983 he ran for the United States Senate seat for Nevada against four-term incumbent Democrat Howard Cannon, narrowly winning that race by 6,000 votes. During his time in the Senate he chaired the subcommittee for Housing and Urban Affairs. He served only one term (1983-1989) being defeated by Democratic Nevada Governor Richard Bryan. In March of 1989 he was appointed ambassador to the Bahamas by President George H.W. Bush and continued in that post under President Bill Clinton until 1994. Mr. Hecht died of prostate cancer in a Las Vegas hospital at age 77.
