Died in this village, on Saturday morning, Dec. 1st, 1883, in the 71st year of his age, of heart disease, Thomas James. Deceased was one of our oldest settlers, and had been complaining for the past five years, but was confined to his bed only for a short time prior to his death. His wife died on the 23d of November the preceding year. Five children survive the parents, the youngest, Andrew, remaining at home to attend and adminster to the wants of his aged and afflicted father, to whom the son as much attached.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and the remains followed to the Catholic cemetery by a large concourse of friends. The following from the "Fathers of Wisconsin," a biographical work on the early settlers, is timely at this writing.
The ancestry of Thomas James on both sides of both father and mother, was of Virginia orgin, but the family at a very early date emigrated to Kentucky, and by subsequent marriages becaem intimately related to the Buckner and Garnet families of that state. He was born in Barren county, August 30, 1812, received a common school education, was by general profession a farmer, but much of his life has been spent in a judicial capacity- he having held the office of justice of the peace, with three years exception, since 1843- or for a period of thirty three years. He located in Shullsburg in 1834, and has ever since resided there. June 3, 1839 he was married to Catherine Meade of Dubuque, Iowa.
