In 1907, John worked as a guard at the Jamestown Exposition in Virginia.

During World War I John was in Frankfort, Germany; Belgium; Bellevue, France; and Switzerland. He was a drill sergeant in a machine gun company, a gas mask instructor and the best shot in his outfit. He was last assigned to 6th Co., 12th Bn.
John was a street car conductor for the Detroit Street Railways from 1917 through 1947.

Fontana- John Burns, 81, of 16450 Orange Way, died Tuesday in an Ontario hospital. Born in Kentontown, Ky., he had lived in Fontana four years.

Mr. Burns is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Wilma Cahill, Fontana; two brothers, William H. Burns, Jr. and Jack Burns, both of Mt. Olivet, Ky.; and four grandchildren.

Bishop Levi B. Thorup of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ingold Chapel. Burial will be in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Bloomington.
