Richard Ferdinand Marquette, 87, Lincoln died at home Wednesday (9/27/06). Born, Fargo, N.D. (1/1/19) to Frederick and Elizabeth Remmenga Marquette.

In the early years of his life, his parents moved several times finally settling in Thief River Falls, Minn. Richard was born into a beekeeping family and started working with bees when he was 7 years old. By the time he was 13, he was quite adept at handling all the beekeeper duties and responsibilities.

Educational opportunities for Richard were not always available or convenient, but he did receive some formal education at public schools and a great deal of informal education at home.

On June 15, 1941, Richard was united in marriage to LuVerne "Vernie" Meyer at the farm home of her parents in Burr. They followed the honey harvest from Minnesota to Texas and Florida before settling on a farm near Douglas in 1947. Richard and Vernie were local honey producers for more that 50 years. They moved to Lincoln in 1974 where Richard continued to work with bees as a hobby.

In the early 1960s, Richard experienced a life-changing experience with Christ. As a deepening walk with the Lord was established, Richard and Vernie opened their home for many Bible studies and prayer meetings. Richard was a member of Christ's Place Church in Lincoln.

One of Richard's greatest pleasures in life was music. Although he never had any formal lessons, he had a natural ability and played the Jew's harp, mandolin, mandolin banjo, accordion, drums, fiddle, saw, spoons, organ, harmonica and tambourine with various gospel music groups.

Survivors: wife, Vernie; children, Richard Jr. "Jerry", Berryville, Ark., Roxanne Dorn, Phoenix, Raymond, Winchester, Calif., Ronda Martz, Fayetteville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred, Ken, Spence, Frank; sisters, Helen, Esther, Agnes, Fran. Preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Marlyn; brother, Roy; sisters, Doris and Jeanette.
