In his youth he worked on his fathers farm and attened school at Washington College, later completing his education at Princeton Seminary. He became Professor of Mathamatics in Washington College and afterwards conducted a school for girls at Jonesboro. He became the first President of King's College in 1867, it ran as a high school the first year. At one time he preached at Cold Spring Church and frequently in Bristol.
