Gary Douglas Bennett, 55, of the 800 block of Post Ave., passed away on Saturday in Chesapeake. A native of Texas, he was the son of Anna Marie Bennett of Nixville, S.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had worked as an electrician for Lyons Shipyard for the past eight years.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Christine W. Bennett; two stepdaughters, Kelley Shipway and her husband Jerry, and Crystal McCardle and her husband Chazz; five grandchildren, Alyssa, Kyle, Samantha, Trevor and Jacob, all of Chesapeake; four sisters, Judy Niedzielski of Stevensville, Mich., Cheryl Griner of Hampton, S.C., Karen Smith of Grays, S.C., and Carol Baker of Moncks Corner, S.C.; and his extended family, Kent and Lisa Bliss, and their children, Madeline, Megan, Chloe and Andrew, all of Atlanta.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, is handling arrangements.
