Haddie Ollene Alexander, 93, passed away at 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at St. Luke's Nursing Center in Carthage, where she had been a resident for eight years.

She was born on a farm west of Avilla, Mo., on Jan. 26, 1914, the daughter of Bruce E. Gilbreath and Fannie M. Hall Gilbreath.

Ollene, as she was known to family and friends all her life, married Jesse Q. Alexander on Feb. 19, 1944, at the First Methodist Church in Carthage.

She was an outstanding cook and homemaker. She was a member of The Methodist Church and a resident of Jasper County all her life. She was employed in the offices of Dr. Walter Pingree, O.D. and State Farm Insurance for several years. For much of her adult life she gave private piano and organ lessons to hundreds of students and was organist for the First Methodist Church and First Church of the Nazarene for many years. In her "spare" time, she knitted thousands of children's caps and scarves for several children's homes and also enjoyed writing poetry.

Ollene was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse in January 1997; one brother, Carroll in April 1937; and by her parents.

She is survived by two sisters, Eula Mae Radford Cooper and her husband, Joe, of Joplin, and Pauline Murray, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Byron Gilbreath and his wife, Joyce, of Raymore, Mo.; four nieces and one nephew; many grandnieces, grandnephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel in Carthage. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Monday until service time with burial in Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to First United Methodist Church, 7th and Main Street, Carthage, Mo., 64836, or Trinity Hospice 1905 West 32nd Street, Suite 406, Joplin, Mo., 64804 in care of Ulmer Funeral Home.
