Additional information courtesy of Dennis Brandt:

The son of Frances or Feronica Eremina (Witmer) Leiter, he married Mary A. Daebler and fathered John P. (b. @1856), Lydia A. (b. 11/??/58 - married Franklin P. Blaine), Mary Louisa (b. @1860), Emma J. (b. @1862), James J. (b. 06/??/64), Matilda M. "Hattie" (b. @1866 - married Gordy Jefferson), and Abraham Isaac (b. @1870). In 1860, he was a blacksmith presumably living in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Dauphin County October 22, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 2 as a private with Co. F, 171st Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 8, 1863. He is on the company register as "Leister." He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 25, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 25 as a private with Co. A, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. He is on the company descriptive list as "Leitner" but applied for his pension as "Leiter," which apparently is the correct spelling.

By 1870, he was living with his family in St. Joseph County, Michigan.
