Dr. Samuel G. Bugh, mail agent on the Mineral Point Railroad died at the U.S. Hotel in Mineral Point, on Tuesday, Aug. 10th. The cause of his death is somewhat obscure, but is supposed to be from morphine. The circumstances we learn were as follows: He took dinner alone, about 2 o'clock ate little, went into the hotel office, conversed with several people, and went to his room about 3 o'clock. He did not make his appearance and was not sought after until Mr. Snow, the conductor, wished to see him at about 6 o'clock. He went to the Doctor's room, and found him dying; a physician was immediately sent for, but he was dead before the physician's arrival. Two vials were found in his room, one had contained morphine, but was empty, the other was half full of morphine. As no cause for the Doctor's intentionally taking an over dose is known, that idea is discarded. Physicians are of the opinion that he died either from the effects of an unintentional over dose or from what is known as accumulative action of previous doses which had failed to take effect at the time they were taken.
Dr. Bugh came to Lafayette county in 1844, has been often honored by the people, and always worthily discharged his trusts. In 1847 and 1848 he was register of deeds of this county, the first after the county governemnt was organized in 49 and 59 he was clerk of the circuit court; in 51 and 52 he was State Senator. He published a paper, the Pick and Gad, at Shullsburg in 1853 4-5. He was a true friend generous to a fault and consequently leaves many warm friends.
He leaves no family, his wife died many years ago. His remains were brought to this village and deposited in the beautiful cemetery, on the hill, Thursday afternoon.
