Alton Harwood Belcher Sr., 88, of Huntsville died Friday in Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Belcher was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Petersburg, Va., to Miriam Andrews Belcher and James Raymond Belcher. He graduated from Virginia Tech, where he played football and was commissioned into the U.S. Army. A World War II veteran, Mr. Belcher was in D-Day, the liberation of Paris, and the Battle of the Bulge. He moved to Huntsville after the war and was employed by Rohm and Haas Co. and Micromedics until his retirement in 1983. He served as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, traveling, and following sports, especially the Virginia Tech Hokies. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Dykes Belcher; and their son, Alton Harwood Belcher Jr.
