Alexander Cooper Smith, 83 of Stanaford, W. Va. was the son of the late William Fisher Smith and Catherine Cooper Smith. He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Maben Energy, was a member of the UMWA, and the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church. He was a resident of Stanaford for the past 75 years. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Dougal, John Andrew, Thomas Fisher, and William F. Smith, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lee Richmond Smith; a son, Bill Smith of Stanaford; two daughters, Margaret Blackburn of Beckley and Kathryn Hawley of Toga Cay, S. C.; a brother, Robert Smith of Beckley; six sisters, Catherine Scott of Stanaford, Mary Smith of Joppatowne, Md., Beatrice Scott of Fayetteville, W. Va., Margaret Carter, Marion Smith and Janet Smith, all of Stanaford; and eight grandchildren.
