Suggested edit: Virgil Lane Mathias, 95, of Mathias, beloved husband and father, passed away Friday morning, July 31st at Avante Nursing Home in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Mathias was born August 15, 1902, at Mathias and was a son of the late Phillip S. and Sadie Caldwell Mathias.

Mr. Mathias is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Mowbray of Mathias and a sister, Viola Gay Smith of Winchester.

Also surviving are two daughters, Marilyn McCabe of Singers Glen, Carolyn Howe of Shippensburg, Pa., two sons, Erlend Mathias of Cool Ridge, W.Va., Monty Mathias of Harrisonburg, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr. Mathias was an active member of the Mathias Church of the Brethren and served in a variety of capacities of the church for 82 years.

He graduated from Bridgewater College with honors. He taught school and coached in Florida, Virginia, and West Virginia before joining the Postal Service in 1936, where he served in a number of capacities, including Postmaster, until his retirement.

He was a charter member of the Mathias Ruritan Club and achieved perfect attendance for more than 40 years. While with the Ruritan International he served as a national director for several years.

Mr. Mathias was President of the Mutual Protection Association of WV and was a local meteorological observer for the National Weather Service for many years.

Mr. Mathias had numerous interests, including baseball, and played minor league baseball for several summers while living in Florida.

Dr. Harold Barnett and Dr. Jack E. Snider will conduct a funeral service Monday, August 3, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Mathias Church of the Brethren. Interment will follow in the Singers Glen Cemetery.
