Mary Birchett Whitley, age 97, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Peter and Ethel Overton Birchett; her sister, Alice Armstrong Weston; and her lifelong friend, Henrietta Smith Mertens. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Clarence E. “Whit” Whitley; her son, Joseph Birchett “Jay” Whitley; her daughters, Carole Whitley (Don) Wagner and Terry Whitley (Dave) Curro; her grandchildren, Claire Whitley (Adam) Rotruck, Kristi Wagner (Jacob) Brackett, Sara Haskins Whitley, Ryan August “Augie” Wagner, Paula Kathryn Wagner and Bret Anthony Curro; her great-grandchildren, Brooks and Bennett Rotruck and Graciela “Chela” Brackett; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Dakota.

Born Mary Williams Birchett on June 29, 1923, at the family home in Richmond’s Fan District, she was a lifelong member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where her parents were founding members. A graduate of the “Cradle Roll” there, she grew up to serve as a Sunday School teacher, choir mother, Deacon, and member of the Presbyterian Women. Throughout her children’s young lives, she was actively involved in the PTA at each of their schools as a room mother, chaperone, chauffeur, and so much more. She was a life member of the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed being involved in the Scottish Rite Women’s Club.

Mary loved to travel, and she and Whit visited more than a dozen countries and nearly all 50 states. She loved sewing, crafts, social events, collecting lamb figurines and seashells, chocolate, and Pepsi. Above all, she loved to help others, a character trait that even years of dementia couldn’t take away from her. She was a dedicated, hard-working, and loving daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She is already missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Sunrise of Richmond and Hospice Community Care/Traditions Health for their kind and loving care these past few years.
