John was a farmer renting various farms in Colorado, and his family lived in the houses provided. He worked for the W.P.A., making 25 cents an hour, along with farming to help provide for his family. He learned to run a road grader that was pulled behind a dump truck. Just after WWII he ran a road grader at Camp (Fort) Carson near Colorado Springs. He helped build many of the streets when the Camp was being built.

In 1950 he moved to Colorado Springs and did odd jobs, then worked for the city street department running a road grader and paving machine. He stayed at this job until he had a heart attack in the 1960s and retired.
