Merrel Sterling Melton, 90, second of 11 children of Fred Leonard and Lena Franklin Melton, was born Jan. 16, 1917, at Fowler in Texas County. He died Sept. 21, 2007, at Texas County Memorial Hospital.

He grew up in an era when children really wanted an education. He attended a rural eight-grade school and rode a pony three years to high school at Gravel Point. He graduated in 1937 from Houston High School, where he made a 50-mile round trip to school.

He married Mildred Fourt Dec. 29, 1940, at the home of her parents with the Rev. J.R. Halbrook officiating. The Meltons were married 66 years and had one son.

Mr. Melton worked for Union Electric of St. Louis until the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He entered the U.S. Air Force in January 1943 at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He was assigned to Army Air Force Tactical Air Command at Orlando, Fla.

Following his discharge, he returned to work for Union Electric. He later went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, working for it 31 years: 11 in St. Louis and 20 at Jacksonville, Fla.

After retiring, the Meltons moved back to Texas County, building a home on the Little Piney River.
Over the years, he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, National Association of Letter Carriers, Houston High School Alumni Association, Texas County Genealogical Society, Wedgewood Country Club and for 57 years, the United Methodist Church.

Mr. Melton enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and playing golf. He was an outdoors person.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Darrel Melton; and one sister, Ollie Mae Proctor.

Surviving are his wife of the home at Houston; one son, Dr. Maurice K. Melton of Columbus, Ga.; two brothers, Glen of Indiana and Gene of Alabama; six sisters, Gladys Baney, Maxine Witt, Ruth Freeman and Madge Freeman of Mountain Grove, Ernestine McKinney of Cabool and Wanda Prock of Indiana; and one grandson.

Services were Sept. 25 at the United Methodist Church in Houston with the Rev. Tom Tomlinson and the Rev. Cleo Kottwitz officiating. Burial with full military honors was in the Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Kidney Fund, American Foundation of the Blind, Hospice of Care or United Methodist Church of Houston.
