Philip D. Maurer, 95, of rural Kiel was called home to be with his Savior on Jan. 2, 2021.

He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on the family homestead.

Philip was born on the family homestead on Aug. 31, 1925 to the late Philip and Kathryn (Kretsch) Maurer. He attended Maple Corner School and received his diploma from Kiel High School. He later joined the Air Force and was Honorably Discharged in 1949.

On Jan. 21, 1961 he married Helen E. Sander at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Louis Corners (Kiel) where he was a lifelong member. The Lord blessed the couple with 55 years of marriage. They were further blessed with seven children during their union—Loretta, Christopher, Brian, Robert, Michael, Gary, and Carol.

Philip was a child of Christ who was devoted to his faith and family. He was active in the church throughout his life. He strived to live his life as a Christian. He enjoyed singing in the Kiel Barbershop Chorus, church choir, and the Lakeshore Chorale. He was a former member of the Shoreline OWLS and the Association for the Developmentally Disabled in Manitowoc County.

He was the fourth generation to farm on the family homestead. The State of Wisconsin honored the family with a Sesquicentennial Award for operating the farm for over 150 years. He ran the farm throughout his career at the Tri-County Co-Op and after his retirement in 1987. He enjoyed driving his “Minnie” well into his late 80s. Afterward, he could still be seen cutting the grass either at the farm or at the church.

Philip is survived by his children Loretta Maurer (Christopher Bresser), Brian (Fernanda) Maurer, Robert (Renee) Maurer, Gary (Sherry) Maurer, and Carol Maurer; grandchildren Michelle (Kevin) Kwoka, Carlos Eduardo Maurer, Jamie Maurer, Jacob Maurer, Gwenyth Maurer, Courtney (Marty) Pleviak, Jerad Rausch, and great-granddaughter Callie Pleviak. He is further survived by his sisters-in-law Dori Maurer, Leona Sander, and Marilyn Rooker, along with many nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents; children Christopher and Michael; siblings and in-laws Kermit (Nellie) Maurer, Bernice (Jack) Vandegrift, Doris (Robert) Wilbert, Kathryn (Monroe) Hansmann, Alan Maurer, and Daniel (Myra) Maurer; and brothers-in-law Eldor (Therese) Sander, Gene Sander, and Raymond Rooker.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Philip’s name.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Louis Corners. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Ted Olsen, with burial to follow in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, Jan. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, Jan. 9 from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
