Philip Gillingham Howard, age 91, resident of Grandview Lodge, Thunder Bay passed away peacefully at on October 13, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.

Born on December 9, 1923 in Brussels, Belgium, Philip moved to New Jersey with his parents when he was about three years old and grew up there. He served in the U.S. military as a medic, and attended National Bible Institute in New York City where he met and married his wife, Margaret Funderburk Howard. (Mrs. Howard passed away in October 2014.) They served together as missionaries in the remote wilderness of Northern Canada for many years and part of that time Philip was the President of the Northern Canada Evangelical Mission. In addition to being an outdoorsman and pioneer, he was also a distinguished linguist doing translations for the Bible into Native American languages, working in translations and creating schooling materials for the government and writing a two-volume dictionary that sits in a number of university libraries, including Northwestern University in Chicago, and Oxford, England.

Philip lived his life in dedication to and obedience to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a wonderful and selfless husband to Margaret, father to Kay Howard Anderson (Chicago) and Eugene (Gene) Howard (Thunder Bay), grandfather to 6 adoring grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

The motto of Phil's life can be summed up in the words of Scripture from Philippians “… everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord”.
