F. S. SIMPSON’S FATHER DEAD

PASSED AWAY AT THE FRANK SIMPSON HOME IN THIS CITY SUNDAY EVENING

FUNERAL MONDAY AT 2 P.M.

Samuel Merrick Simpson, father of Frank S. Simpson, of this city, passed peacefully away at the Simpson home in this city on Sunday evening July 8th, at the advanced age of 92 years, one month and 14 days.

A short service was held at the Simpson residence, 601 E. Colfax street, conducted by Rev. Carl G. Bader, at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon and Frank Simpson then accompanied the body to Clinton, Ill., where it will be laid to rest by the side of his wife, whose death occurred 46 years ago. His brother, Rev. D.M. Simpson, expected to meet him at Ft. Dodge for the balance of the trip.

The regular funeral service will be held at the Universalist church at 3 o’clock this afternoon, in which church he had membership for a great many years. One son, Milzer, died at the age of 24 and is buried by the side of his mother in the Clinton cemetery.

Mr. Simpson was born in Melbrook, Ohio, May 24th, 1863 during the time Andrew Jackson was president. When he was 12 years of age, his parents moved to Clinton, Ill., where he grew to manhood and where he spent the greater part of his life.

He was united in marriage to Miss Angeline James in Clinton in 1866 and five children were born to them, one son, Milzer, died at the age of 24 years. Mrs. Simpson died in 1883, after but 17 years of happy wedded life. Following her death Mr. Simpson made his home with the children, living here with his son, Frank, for the past twenty-two years.

When a young man, Mr. Simpson united with the Universalist church in Clinton and a consistent and happy Christian life, a constant reader and student of his Bible until his failing eyesight and his deafness almost completely shut him off from his great pleasure.

All who knew Mr. Simpson regarded him with great affection and respect. His closing years were made as comfortable as possible by the tender and devoted care of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Simpson. And it was in their home that God called him in the peace and quiet of last Sunday evening.

He is survived by four children, Mrs. J.N. Diest of Harper, Kans.; Frank S. Simpson of this city; Rev. D.M. Simpson of Goldfield, Iowa; and Rev. C.H. Simpson of Courtland, Kans. There are sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren , with other relatives and many friends.

Corrections to Samuel’s obituary (made by Judy Simpson):

Samuel was born in 1836, not 1863.

Samuel was laid to rest beside his first wife, Mariah Hester Peddicord, in Woodlawn Cemetery in Clinton, Illinos. Hester died in 1863, so she died 65 years before Samuel not 46. It was customary for the husband to be buried next to his first wife.

His second wife, Angeline, died in 1882. She died 46 years before Samuel.

Samuel’s first son, William Milzor Simpson died at age 24, but he was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Rantoul, Champaign County, Illinois, next to his step-mother, Angeline, not next to his mother in Clinton.

Samuel was born in Montgomery County, Ohio. The family later lived in nearby Greene County, Ohio, not too far from the town of Bellbrook (not Melbrook).

The family moved to Clinton, DeWitt County, Illinois, in 1855 when Samuel was 19 years old, not 12.

Samuel married Angeline James in 1865, not 1866, and they had four children, not five. Angeline died in 1882, not 1883.

One obituary has Rev. Carl G. Bader conducting the service and another has Rev. Carl A. Poulson. I don’t know which is correct.
