Carol R. Wester, age 71, of Manitowoc, passed away Oct. 3, 2007, at home. She was surrounded by her loving family after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.

Carol was born on May 15, 1936, in the city of Plymouth, to the late Lawrance and Cora (Hetzel) O'Grady. She attended St. Mary's Clarks Mills Catholic Grade School and graduated in 1954 from Valders High School. She attended Holy Family School of Nursing, graduating in 1957. After graduation she married Calvin J. Wester at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clark's Mills, on Aug. 31, 1957. Carol continued her education attending the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee receiving her Bachelors of Nursing in 1970, her Master in Curriculm and Instruction in 1975, and a Master in Nursing in 1989. Carol was a nursing instructor at Holy Family School of Nursing until it closed in 1976. She also taught at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton from 1977 to 1979. She then taught at Lakeshore Technical College, in the nursing program, from 1979 to her retirement in May 1994.

Carol was involved with many professional and volunteer organizations, giving many hours of her time to causes she thought were important. These included: Life-time member of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Alumini Association, Wisconsin State Examing Board of Nursing for four years, National League of Nursing, and 12th District Wisconsin Nursing Association, holding various positions in these organizations. Her passion and love was always directed toward the Catholic Church. She sat on various committees at St. Boniface Catholic Church including Finance, Board of Education, Parish Council, and St. Clara Catholic Women. She also was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, and the Resurrection Choir at St. Francis of Assisi. Her dedication to Catholic Education called her to serve on the Roncalli High School Board of Education. She was also a board member of Holy Family Memorial Human Resources Development Committee Her passions in life were church, family, grandchildren and her flowers at St. Boniface. She spent countless hours, planting, weeding, dead-heading, mulching and planning what flowers to plant the next year. She was a lector and communion distributor. She enjoyed going to the Island of Dominica to build shelters for the poor for nine years as head of the painting group with the Good News Organization of Wausau. She was a mother who was involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren, attending many activities and events.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by one brother: John O'Grady; three brother-in-laws: John Wester, Sr., Robert Wester and William Wester; and one sister-in-law: Delores Wester.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen, with entombment at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007. A prayer service will conclude the visitation at 7:30 p.m., led by the Rev. Richard Klingeisen.

The family will also greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, until the time of service at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carol R. Wester Scholarship Fund at Roncalli High School.

The Wester family extends a special thanks to Dr. Lynn Baatz, Holy Family Memorial Medical Center nurses and staff of The Cancer Center, Fifth Floor, and Hospice team for their care and compassion in Carol's long struggle with cancer.
