Velda was born February 12, 1926 In Montrose, Missouri, daughter of Sam and Doris (James) Cook. She attended St. Ludger grade school in Germantown, MO and high school in Montrose, MO and Independence, MO. Velda married Joseph Hanna on May 23, 1945. They were members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Holden, Missouri. She had three brothers: Norman; Edwards; Gerald; and three sisters: Dorothy; Joyce; and Lola. Surviving are the two brothers: Edward; Gerald; and two sisters: Joyce Calvert; and Lola Putthoff. Joseph and Velda had three sons: Sam; Mike; Martin; and daughter: Sheran. Surviving is one son: Sam. They had two grandsons: Marc (Dustin) Hanna; Kyle Hanna; and one granddaughter: Courtney Hanna. Surviving is one grandson: Kyle; and one granddaughter: Courtney. Joe’s cousin, Tony (Lerda) came to live with them as a teenage and helped with the farming. He attended and graduated from Holden High. Velda had a very active, involved life. Joe and Velda operated their farms for 60 plus years and The Second Time Around Store for approximately 20 years. She was active in Church choir, and The Altar Society. Along with that, she was a marriage counselor at church for engaged couples. She taught Sunday school for several years. She also served as treasurer for Cerebral Palsy School for handicapped in Warrensburg, MO. She was Ward parent for 41 girls for 5 years at the Higginsville State School. Joe and Velda belonged to the Square Dance Club for 33 years.
Funeral Mass will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Holden, Missouri with Fr. Curt Vogel officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Holden, Missouri. Pallbearers will be Kyle Hanna, Charlie Strange, Donnie Davidson, Joel Pemberton, Joe Treece, and Tom Haun. Honorary Pallbearers are Rick Hanna, Lyle Hanna, Lynn Gudde, and David Lerda.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Holden, Missouri.
