Jasper John Blystone passed away on September 3, 2016. He was the son of Jasper Kepler Blystone and Gertrude Elizabeth Underwood Byrne and was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 16, 1928. Because his father worked for 20th Century Fox, the social and artistic world of Hollywood and in "motion pictures" (as his father called them) was his first memory. Since his mother belonged to an Irish family of Southern Pacific railroads and resolute jurists, he was sent to the famous St. John's Military Academy in Los Angeles to prepare for any worldly eventuality. He entered the University of Southern California as a chemistry major, eventually shifted to pre-law because of his preference for semantics over mathematics, yet ended up in what we all know as the "humanities". The latter was essentially a study of the literary classics of all world culture and the absolute basis of all his intellectual ways and by-ways. Nevertheless, the proto-chemist in him insisted that he seek out a general theory of the "human sciences", which then put him into philosophy. Leaving USC with a masters in Renaissance Studies, like a young Faust he ventured first to the University of Heidelberg and then to the University of Mainz where he wrote the first dissertation in German on the problem of the realization of moral values. It has been out of his constantly evolving preoccupation with the latter that he completely revised our notion of the ethical nature of the human person, coming up with the idea of "personability". He was a Professor of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles for over 50 years. He is the author of " The Pragmatics of the Human Heritage". He is survived by his wife Laura, of Lone Pine, CA and his filmmaker son, Peter Blystone of Flagstaff AZ. A Rosary will be said at Santa Rosa Catholic Church in Lone Pine, CA, on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Santa Rosa Catholic Church on September 24, 2016 at 11:00 am, followed by interment at Mt. Whitney Cemetery. Please join family and friends for a luncheon following interment in Crowley Hall at Santa Rosa Catholic Church.
