Due to COVID-19 John's children have decided to have a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life party sometime in the Spring/Summer of 2021. John's ashes will be buried at Tulip Cemetary in Athens, LA beside his first wife Wanda Volentine Head. There will be a gathering somewhere in the Athens area to honor John's life. More information will be given over the next few weeks.

John was born August 27, 1941 in Prescott, AR to Earl Head and Jessie Fern Milner Head McKinnon. He attended school in Blevins and Prescott before moving to Magnolia, AR and graduating from high school there. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1959 and served for 3 ½ years, stationed in Alaska and Sacramento, CA. John was honorably discharged as Airman First Class in 1963. He and Wanda Volentine Head were married on October 9, 1961 and after leaving the Air Force, they moved to Shreveport, LA to raise their family. Over the years John and Wanda had 5 children. He moved to Athens LA after retiring from Exide Battery, the Shreveport, LA plant in 2012. He worked there for 45 years and continued as an independent contractor until his death. At the time of retirement he moved to Athens, LA and lived there until he married Cheryl Morgan in 2017 and moved to El Dorado, AR.

John is survived by his second wife Cheryl Morgan; three daughters, Karen Roberts (James) of Chatham, LA, Teresa Rougon (Shawn) of Denham Springs, LA, Kathleen Givens of Franklin, OH; two sons, Richard Head (Margo) of Waterford, WI, Michael Head (Alecia) of Shreveport, LA. Two stepdaughters, Cindy Saulsbury and Kelly Jones-Wilson (Tim). Fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; and a sister Sherlyn Dyda (Bill) of Santa Fe, TX, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Wanda Volentine Head, sister Lois Merle Head and great granddaughter, Rozalynn Dunivan.

While in Shreveport John was very involved with his children and community. From 1968 to 1979 he coached various football, basketball, baseball, softball and track teams for Summer Grove Community Athletic Club. In 1979 he began genealogy research, starting with his family tree. He and his now deceased wife, Wanda Volentine, published and printed genealogical material for sale to the general public beginning around 1988 and attended all the major conferences and seminars in the area. They were very active in the Friends of Genealogy-Shreveport Chapter and donated thousands of hours of time, material and research to the Shreveport Memorial Library and the Mormon Library.

When John moved to Arkansas he became a member of the Union County Genealogical Society where he served as publisher of their semi-annual "Tracks and Traces". He also spent several hours every day on his computer doing genealogical research until he became ill.

John also served as a volunteer for the USGS National Map Corps where he recently received a certificate for logging 1,000 cemeteries.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was an American patriot who loved and honored his country. He was a Christian and loved his Lord and Savior. He was a member of East Main Baptist Church. He will never be forgotten as he will live on in our hearts until we meet again.
