On Veterans' Day, November 11, 2020, Lola (Pauline) Steele Shepherd, 91, reunited with her beloved husband, Wilson Eliot Driver Shepherd, who predeceased her in 2012.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1929, to the late Captain James M. Steele (USN) and Erma Garrett Steele, Lola was a proud United States Navy junior, spending her childhood at her father's various duty stations in the United States and Panama. She and her mother were in Hawaii on December 7, 1941 when the USS Utah, commanded by her father, was attacked and sunk. Captain Steele was immediately charged with directing efforts to "resurrect the Fleet." Lola absolutely loved Hawaii, where she attended Punahou School. An alumnus of Holton-Arms School, she graduated from Sweet Briar College (Phi Beta Kappa).

In 1951, Lola married Wilson E. D. Shepherd, a USMC officer, before he shipped out to Korea. Over 60 years, they shared a love of horses, trailering their daughters' Chincoteague pony from Virginia to California in 1961. During 35 years in San Diego, horses, boogie-boarding, tennis, backpacking and skiing were the family hobbies.

Proud of her Texas roots (her grandfather was a Texas Ranger), the Shepherds brought two, Doc Bar, cutting quarter horse fillies to Lexington, Va. in 1994. For 20 years, as Rockbridge Hunt members, using Western saddles, they enjoyed "hill topping" their "girls."

Survivors include Sassy, her 29-year-old cutting quarter horse; daughters, Sallie and Virginia Shepherd (Richmond); granddaughter, Dr. Marie L. Chardon (Cincinnati); grandson, Robert E. Chardon (Saasha Sciascia, Palmerston North, New Zealand); and three great-grandchildren, Liam, Cole and Ava.

Also predeceasing Lola were in-laws, General and Mrs. (Virginia) Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr. (USMC) and brother, VAdm. George P. Steele II (USN).

Suggested memorial donations include Pearl Harbor National Memorial (Attn: USS Utah), Rockbridge Hunt, Punahou School, and Holton-Arms School.
