"At age 101, Benson resident Byron Dale Harlan, a San Pedro Valley mainstay, died at his home at the Harlan Ranch on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Harlan was born on April 6, 1900 in London Mills Ill., where 16 generations of Harlans had been raised. Ruth Green, Harlan's caretaker of many years, said Harlan would tell stories about streets being named after his family in the small Illinois town.

'He had so many friends,' Green said. 'He was such a brilliant person. We spent hours listening to his stories. After all, so much happened to him since 1900. I'm glad I got to know him and spend so many years with him. I don't regret one minute of taking care of him.'

Green said she started taking care of Harlan, three nights a week, over six years ago. She said after three years, Harlan requested she take care of him fulltime. She said she was more than just his caretaker, they became close friends.

'He accepted my family and they accepted him," Green said. "My kids thought of him as their grandfather. They are the ones taking his death the hardest. I don't know what to say except that he's been a great companion.'

Harlan was retired from Prudential Life Insurance where he worked for close to 24 years. He lived in Monrovia, Calif. before moving to Benson in 1950, where he resided at the Harlan Ranch.

Green said Harlan made it a point to be involved in the Benson community. In September, Harlan was honored by the Arizona and Illinois Grand Mason Lodge for his 75-year membership in the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Harlan was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the San Pedro Valley united Methodist Church.

'There are so many things to remember about him,' said granddaughter Pamela Harlan. 'The big yellow Cadillac he had, all the stories that were about his life of 100 years, and that twinkle in his eyes when he was getting ready to play a joke on you. He always reminded me of Colonel Sanders [fast food magnate] with that big white hat and mustache.'

Over the years, Harlan had been featured in the San Pedro Valley News-Sun.

'I think what I remember the most about Mr. Harlan was his quick-witted candor,' said News-Sun Managing Editor Chris Dabovich, who interviewed Harlan in 1998 for a feature story. 'Despite his age and health, his sight was beginning to fail him then, he was able to vividly recount dates and accounts of his life which, as you can imagine, was extremely interesting. He was just a great old guy and he'll definitely be missed throughout the San Pedro Valley.'
