Mr. Root was born on May 11, 1931 in White County, the son of George L. and Mary (Copley) Root. He married Wanda Stoltz. She preceded him in death. He married Shirley (Rister) Cunningham in 1994. She survives.
He was a Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Church of Christ in Mt. Carmel. He was a construction worker and roughneck in the oil field for several years before he retired.
Mr. Root is survived by his wife, Shirley Root of Mt. Carmel; two sons, Marvin Root of Carmi and Russell Root and his wife, Peggy of West Liberty; a daughter, Brenda Cooper and her husband, Larry of Albion; three stepsons, Chris Cunningham and his wife Laura, Robert Cunningham and his wife, Lora and Kendall Cunningham and his wife, Theresa all of Mt. Carmel; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Herschel and Jim Root both of Bone Gap, Mark Root of Albion and Kenny Root of Wayne County; and a sister, Frankie Kortge of West Salem.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife.
