DUNLAP -- Merrit L. Smith, 68, of Morris, formerly of Dunlap, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Morris Hospital.

Born April 30, 1932, in Fillmore to Walter H. and Freida Kirkman Smith, he married Phyllis A. Carver on Aug. 13, 1955, in Dunlap. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Janice (and Ron) Carter of Morris; two sons, Craig of Morris and Brad of Minooka; one sister, Judith (and Wayne) Bryant of Washington; one brother, Frank (and Carol) Smith of Dunlap; four grandchildren; and three nephews.

He worked for Caterpillar Inc. in Joliet for 36 1/2 years, retiring in 1989. He formed Merrit L. Smith Inc. and contracted to Advance Technology Services in East Peoria and Dar-Tec in Morton, retiring in 1995.

He served on the Dunlap Fire Department for 10 years.

He was a former member of Morris Free Methodist Church.

He and his wife spent their winters in Arroyo City, Texas.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Prospect Cemetery in Dunlap. The Rev. Mary Kathryn Pearce will officiate. U.C. Davis & Sons Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
