The Rev. John Sawyer Arbuthnot was son of James Burton and Catherine White Arbuthnot. He was a Methodist circuit preacher in St. Helena Parish and surrounding area as well as a farmer. He married Mary Ann (Polly) Hodges on 16/7/1830. He and Polly settled on Spring Creek and reared 11 children--Mary Ann, William, James. Stanley Viers, Elizabeth, Eliz Catherine, John Wesley, Martha, Margret, Robert, and Mary Julia.
