Steve Howard Brooks was one of 12 children from the union of Samuel O. Brooks and Mae Salina Terry Brooks. PFC Brooks was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, when he was killed in a tragic accident. He and two other soldiers were pushing a broken-down car off the interstate when a tractor trailer rammed into the back of it. Two unnamed solders were pushing the back of the vehicle and jumped out of the way as the truck approached. PFC Brooks was pushing the car and was steering it with his right hand. He was hit by the truck. The death certificate states that he died of a broken neck. He was survived by his wife Gwen Maxine Hutchinson Brooks. He was in the 502nd Chem. Co., U.S. Army. He was buried at Shady Grove Cemetery in Laurel, MS.
