Betty was born to Dominick and Anna (Bricker) Wipfli, of Nekoosa, on November 5, 1925. She is the last sibling of the Wipfli family whose roots span over 150 years in Nekoosa. Betty was a resident of Nekoosa most of her life. After graduating from Nekoosa High School, she attended and graduated from Miserconcordia School of Nursing in Milwaukee, WI. She then spent a period of time working in the United States Army Nurse Corp before meeting and marrying her late husband and former Mayor of Nekoosa, Edward Barth on July 18. 1946. Betty and Ed lived in San Francisco, briefly, before returning to Nekoosa. She proudly spent over 30 years at the Nekoosa Medical Center working as a Nurse and X-ray Technician. After the premature death of Ed, she then became an active participant in the city’s government as one of the 1st Alderwoman serving in the State of Wisconsin.
In March of 1967, she remarried George Michels. They were married 41 years until his passing in December 2008. During their marriage, Betty discontinued her civic involvement and put most of her life into maintaining a blended family, nursing and enjoying life.
Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend and nurse too many over her years. Her biggest priority for her family was a devotion to God. All of her life she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. George and Betty spent many happy years traveling and entertaining, but mostly enjoyed their time at their beloved cabin in Minocqua, WI, “The Answer.” After retirement, their winter residence was Panama City Beach, FL where they lived on the beach. Betty enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking, lunching with the Birthday Club, playing Bridge, piano, and relaxing in the moment when she had the chance. She lived a good life and was loved by many!
She is survived by four children, David Barth (Kathy), Ann Roboul, Chris Barth (Marian) and Susan Falkosky (Randy) and 5 step children, Jim Michels (Diane), Laura Boyles, Kim Passineau (Doug), Lee Ann Boden (Todd), and Nick Michels (Lori).
