Francis (Hagel) Oland, 84, was born March 25, 1936, to Asaf and Beada (Just) Hagel in Eureka, South Dakota. After a long struggle with progressive cognitive disorder consistent with Alzheimer’s, she died on January 31, 2021 at Novak Cottage on the WyndStone Campus of St. John’s United.

On June 28, 2020, she celebrated with Sherman their 61st wedding anniversary.

She was preceded in death by baby Grant Michael Oland, grandparents, parents, brother Leland, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her husband Sherman; children, Jason Oland, and Jennifer (Oland) Moodie; and grandchildren; Briana (Price) Knight, (Storm), Mason and Marlee Moodie and Terra Price; Great grandchildren; Storm W. and Piper W. Knight; niece Marsha (Hagel) Mutchler; and nephew Greg Hagel.

Francis attended elementary school in Eureka, SD and Vancouver, WA. After graduating from Eureka High School, she attended Yankton College and Northern State College. She taught rural schools in McPherson County, SD for four years.

On June 28, 1959, Francis married Sherman E. Oland at St. Paul’s Congregational Church in Eureka, SD. The ceremony was performed by Rev. R. Knaus who had also baptized and confirmed her. They traveled extensively throughout SD for two years while Sherman worked with highway construction contractors. He became a Civil Engineer and began working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs which relocated them to North Dakota, New Mexico, and Billings, MT. After moving to Billings, she worked for Brockels Chocolates, making and selling the finest candy in Montana. She enjoyed house plants and had a beautiful flower garden that bloomed from spring to fall.

In Aberdeen, SD she was a charter member of an organization that advocated for improving the learning opportunities for children with learning disabilities in the Public School System. She belonged to a very active craft club and created many of the Christmas tree ornaments that we have to this day. After moving to Montana she was very involved in First Congregational Church, the Montana Northern Conference of the UCC, and the Montana Association of Churches, served on numerous committees, the Church Council and the Board of Directors of the Conference. She represented the Church on the Community Daycare Board from 1995 to 1998 and became President in 1997. She was an active member of Mayflower Circle, sang in the Church Choir at First, and played hand bells for a number of years with the “Tinabulators” led by Marsha Spaulding. A beloved partner, wonderful wife, mother and cook who made our house a home wherever we lived. Her health issues through all of her accomplishments made it all the more admirable that she wouldn’t give up. She was truly God’s gift to the world. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of your choice.

A private inurnment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens with a Celebration of Life at Mayflower Congregational, UCC at a later date.
