Lettice (COWPER) PAPWORTH was the wife of William PAPWORTH, Yeoman of Hitchin. Her maiden name has been proven to have been COWPER, daughter of Michael COWPER (Sr.) and Margaret EVERRE.

Her husband William names a William COWPER of London as his brother-in-law.

A better approximate birth year for Lettice would have been around 1522 (previously estimated to have been about 1517), and she seems to have been born in Arlesey in Bedfordshire.

Apparently, she is the Lettice PAPWORTH, "Widow", who is mentioned in the parish records for burials in 1592. She would have died about 9 Jul 1592, surviving her beloved husband William by 27 years, and was buried [next to him?] on 11 Jul 1592 at St. Mary's Church in Hitchin.

The great Brockett family research site "The Brockett Archive" has a menu titled "Where?"; Britain; England; Hertfordshire; down the list there to #10 "Hitchin Papworths to 1650", which opens a delightful and well-researched, well-sourced page filled with data on this PAPWORTH line, and includes the immediate COWPER & WOODHOUSE (KENT) ancestral data, with the connection to the UNDERWOOD family of Weston, Herts, made plain. The page (officially titled "The Papworths of Hitchin half hundred to 1650") has several places to "Read More", which upon selecting additional text will expand onto the same page; same goes for the Footnotes section. The page titled "William Brockett of Hitchin II" has more details about his wife Alice PAPWORTH and her 2nd husband George UNDERWOOD of Weston.
