On October 7, 1895 she became the wife of 1947 Nobel Prize in Literature recipient André Gide. They were cousins and childhood friends. Following a long estrangement from her husband, she died in 1939. After never mentioning her in anything, her husband wrote her memoirs, “Madeleine,” in which he stated that their marriage was never consummated but he deeply loved her, and repented for all the wrongs he had done, which included intimate relationships with several men and at least one woman. This was published in 1951 posthumously.
