Shortly after, Nathan was diagnosed with tuberculosis and the family traveled south seeking a better climate for his disease. The family was living in Nice, France when Nathan died of pulmonary tuberculosis on 26 December 1879. The following day, Kerstin died of the same disease. With the assistance of Sophie's brother-in-law, Nathan and Kerstin's bodies were brought to Gothenburg, Sweden and buried in January 1880.
