James Leroy Bacon Jr.
August 21, 1938 - February 12, 2021

James Leroy Bacon of Fredericksburg passed away on Friday February 12th at his home at the age of 82 years.

James Leroy Bacon, Jr., born August 21, 1938.

Son of James Leroy Bacon and Eva Ellison Bacon, Jim was born in Springfield, Missouri. The oldest son of their twelve kids, Jim was inspired to pursue a career in medicine. He graduated from Southwest Missouri State in 1960 and went on to earn his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1964.

A mutual friend introduced Jim to his future wife, Sue Snider. They married after Jim's medical internship and together, they served a tour with the United States Army where Jim was a medical advisor to the Korean Army. He received the Army's Commendation Medal and numerous recommendations from the Korean government for his work with the Korean people. His next assignment was to military bases in Germany, including Munich and Stuttgart. Following his discharge, he began a surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic but switched to emergency medicine, completing his residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1973. After two years with the University where he taught in the Emergency Medicine program, Jim began a new adventure.

Jim felt a calling to help those most in need. With the renewal of the diaconate after the Second Vatican Council, Jim joined the Diaconate in Louisville and served as a deacon in the Catholic Church for more than forty years. Accompanied by his wife and four children, Jim moved to the island of St. Lucia, in the West Indies to become a medical missionary. This was the prime of Jim's career, serving as the only doctor to the town of Soufriere and the surrounding villages. He oversaw many advances in the small hospital and dedicated himself to iniproving the quality of care.

After several years in St. Lucia, Jim and the family returned to the United States where he practiced emergency medicine in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He raised his family in Tulsa and considered it home for a decade. Among his favorite memories of Tulsa was being a part of the Catholic Renewal movement in the Tulsa Diocese and participating in a large family-based prayer group. In 1985, Jim accepted an opportunity to practice medicine in Midland, Texas. Ever mindful of Christ's call to take care of the least among us, Jim started a clinic for the working poor. In 1995, Jim and Sue moved to the small town of Iraan where Jim once again became a town doctor.

While in Iraan, Jim and Sue built a home in Fredericksburg, where they envisioned retiring. Upon his retirement from medicine in the year 2000, Jim and Sue moved there. Continuing his service as a Deacon, Jim became actively involved in the parish of St. Mary's and especially loved leading Scripture studies. He volunteered his medical skills at the Good Samaritan Center in

Fredericksburg. Jim loved to use his hands and spent many hours working with wood. His family and many friends will always cherish the crosses he carefully carved to be held as one prays.

Jim loved his God and Church, his loving wife and his family. He modeled how we can passionately serve Christ and be a part of this world, making it a better place through humble service. While Jim's last years were marked with his struggle with dementia, Jim remained a gentle and loving man, ever grateful for the Lord's blessings upon his life.

Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sue Bacon; four children, Michael Bacon (Suzie Bacon), Kim Bacon (Jed Taylor), Paul Bacon (Angie Bacon) and Ben Bacon (Erin Bacon). There are also nine loving grandchildren, Sam, Kyle, Eli, Brandon, Reid, Eric, Michael Diane, Max and Dyer Bacon.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday February 19th at 2:00 p.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Jim Harnan officiating. Rosary Services will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church prior to the Mass with Deacon Pat Klein officiating.

After the Mass Jim’s body will be cremated.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s memory to the St. Mary’s School Endowment Fund, The Good Samaritan Center, or to the charity of your choice.
