Elizabeth was the 11th of 12 children of parents Timothy Halstead, Jr. (1658-1735) and his wife Abigail (Carmen) Halstead (1665-1732) originally from Hempstead on Long Island, New York. Her parents are both buried in this same cemetery. Elizabeth and all of her siblings were born and raised on Long Island, New York. Elizabeth's father Timothy purchased 400 acres south of Elizabeth Creek in New Jersey on March 4, 1721 for 1,500 British pounds. The family relocated to New Jersey after this land purchase.

Elizabeth became the second wife of Jonathan Allen (1697-1758), in 1733, a year after his first wife Mary died. Elizabeth would have two sons with Jonathan Allen - Charles Allen (b. 1734) named after Jonathan's father Charles Allen (1655-1717), buried in this same cemetery. Second son Matthias Allen was born in 1736. Jonathan Allen had at least three children by his first wife Mary including sons Daniel, Joseph, and daughter Mary Allen.

In 1742 Elizabeth's eldest sister Hannah (Halstead) Mitchell, widow of Jacob Mitchell, died and left behind her 14 year-old son Nathaniel Mitchell. Elizabeth and her husband Jonathan Allen became his legal guardians and she raised her nephew, along with her own two sons, until adulthood.
