Passed away Tuesday evening, July 29, 2003 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo following a short illness. He was born December 7, 1922 in Paw Paw, son of the late Dennis and Etheleta Middaugh. Vern was a veteran of the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946 during World War II, and the United States Army from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict. Vern was a police officer for the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department. He was head of security at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in South Haven, and then employed by First of America/National City Bank as a bank courier until his retirement. Vern then was employed as a security guard by Charles Services at National City Bank for four years. He married Veola Bradfield on May 29, 1998 in Kalamazoo. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Kalamazoo, the Southwestern Michigan Law Enforcement Association, and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Vern is survived by his wife, Veola Middaugh; a son, Kim (Lynn) Middaugh of Lawrence; a daughter, Andrea (Rick) Kendall of Paw Paw; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Horace "Hoddy" (Betty) Middaugh of Paw Paw, and Frances "Hook" (Clemmie) Middaugh of Wilmington, North Carolina; two sisters, Nancy (Norman) Lothamer of Three Rivers, and Nellie Mae (Dale) Beach of Paw Paw. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roscoe "Rock", Dennis and Orson "Ort" Middaugh; and one sister, Lucille "Pat" Sheppard. Respecting Mr. Middaugh's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, with Rev. James Dyke officiating. Memorial contributions in Vern's memory may be made to the Fort Custer Honor Guard. The family is being served by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Online memorialization available at
