She attended Columbia Elementary in El Monte, California, and graduated from El Monte High School in 1948. Erna always enjoyed music. She loved to sing and play the piano and instilled a love of music in her children.
Erna married Mervin Howard June 23,1951, in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. To this union, were born ten children. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints, where she served in many callings throughout the years. In 2002, she accepted a call to serve in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Mission as a senior sister.
Erna's full-time job was being a wife and mom to her ten children. She worked endless hours without monetary pay to ensure her children were well-taken care of. She was an excellent cook. She put hundreds of hours into sewing clothing for humanitarian aid. She was extremely talented at embroidery and crocheting, and crocheted many afghans and hats for family members. She also quilted countless baby quilts and full-sized quilts.
She is survived by her children, Rosemarie Howard of Springville, UT; Ed (Brinda) Howard of Rexburg, ID; Pauline (Ron) Albaugh of Chester, ID; Shirley (Scott) Robinson, of Evanston, WY; Richard (Jodi) Howard of Rigby, ID; Ann (Jim) Dalley, of Pocatello, ID; Alice (Greg) Moore of St. Anthony, ID; Miriam (Cris) Stevens of Layton, UT; Gordon (Melinda) Howard of Shelley, ID; and Brian (Kami) Howard of Sugar City, Idaho, and 34 grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Grace Jones of Coeur d' Alene, ID; Elizabeth (Brian) Evans of St. George, UT, and one brother, Edward (Diane) Dahl of Diamond Bar, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, John Dahl.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 5, at the Ashton LDS Stake Center, 512 N. 2nd Street, with Bishop Chuck Hanson of the Chester Ward officiating. The family will receive friends and family, Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., and Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., both times at the stake center. Interment will be in the Chester Cemetery.
