"Former Mayor Ernest T. Whitaker of this village collapsed and died Sunday morning while playing golf on the Cooperstown Country Club course. Mr. Whitaker, who was 57, was playing in a foursome with Postmaster M. C. Bundy, Angelo V. Pugliese and Dr. G. Kenneth Noakes when he suffered a fatal heart attack about 10:30 a.m. while sitting on the 11th tee. Mr. Pugliese called the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital ambulance and Dr. Noakes administered emergency treatment, but Mr. Whitaker passed away shortly after the attack. He served two one-year terms as Mayor of the village in 1946 and 1947, after having been a member of the Village Board of Trustees the preceding four years. At his death, he was a member of the Village Board of Assessors. He was born in Whitehall on December 10, 1902, a son of Edward and Ella (Havens) Whitaker, and had been a resident of this village for the past 50 years. At his death, Mr. Whitaker was a timekeeper for the Otsego County Highway Department ... Mr. Whitaker married the former Miss Mildred Weeks of this village on September 6, 1924. She survives together with a son, Ernest T. Whitaker, Jr. of this village; a daughter, Mrs. Warren Whippen of Dover, Pa., formerly of York, Pa.; a brother, William Whitaker of Poland; three grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Christ Church with the Rector, the Rev. George F. French, officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery ..."
