Retired Lowell Firefighter and 7-Year Lowell Police Officer

LOWELL

Leo J. Sheridan, 94, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on February 10th after a long, full life.

"Ben" was the beloved husband of the late Rita (Laferriere) Sheridan with whom he shared 60 years of marriage in their home on Cosgrove Street.

Born in Lowell, on October 31, 1926, he was the fourth son of the late Alice and Thomas Sheridan. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and was a graduate of Lowell High School, Class of 1944. He was a lifelong parishioner of the Sacred Heart/Holy Family Parish.

Leo dedicated his life to public service. At the age of 18, he joined the United States Navy and served during World War II. Upon discharge he began his service to the City of Lowell as a member of the Lowell Police Department for 7 years before moving onto the Lowell Fire Department, where he enjoyed a 33-year career driving Ladder 2. He received commendations from both departments and was named Fire Fighter of the Year in 1982.

In retirement, he continued his service to the city, as the President of the Lowell Retired Firefighters Association for more than a decade.

Many knew Leo, as "The Electrolux Man" as he enjoyed thirty years of successful employment in vacuum cleaner sales and service. He was always ready to provide a demonstration or take an order.

Leo loved music and entertained in Boston at Patton's Restaurant singing as a duet with his great friend Omer Simard. He loved car rides to the beach and the mountains with Rita and in later years riding with his friend Kevin Mann, going wherever the fire scanner led them. He was a proud Papa, a frequent babysitter, and dedicated fan at the sporting events of his grandchildren.

Leo is survived by his four children and their spouses: Linda Gallagher and her husband Michael of Lowell, Leo Sheridan Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Lowell, Lisa Slattery and her husband, Shawn of Andover, and Deborah Gilligan and her husband, William of Lowell. He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren including: Ryan Gallagher and his wife Claire, Rory Gallagher, Drew Gallagher, Kristen Laurin and her husband Brad, Leo W. Sheridan and his partner Leah Demers, Kaitlyn and Collin Gilligan, Brendan and Michael Slattery; and two great- grandchildren, Nolan and Tucker Laurin. He also leaves several nephews, nieces and their families.

He was predeceased by his brothers: Edward Sheridan and his wife Laura, Thomas Sheridan and his wife Lillian and William Sheridan; his in-laws, Alec and Yvonne Laferriere, Lucille and Mathias Boynton, and Leo and Kay Laferriere; his nephews, Thomas Sheridan, Daniel Sheridan, Matthew Hall; and his dear friends Omer and Rita Simard.
