Russell W. Abbate, 82 of Whittier, Calif., passed away Sat., July 24, 2010.
He was born on Oct. 19, 1927, in Erie. He was the son of the late Antonio and Girolama (Mannino) Abbate. Russ was a 1941 graduate of Saint Patrick grade school and Cathedral Prep class of 1945. He attended Edinboro University and Gannon University. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, having served in Germany as an army photgrapher. He earned his master's degree in education. He taught school at Asbury Elementary School in the mid 1950's and in 1959 continued teaching in Whittier, California until his retirement after 37 years. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marjorie Taccone Abbate and infant son Anthony, a sister Mary (Mamie) Kozik, and two brothers, Peter Abbate and Joseph Abbate. He is survived by his daughter Christine Taylor and two grandsons Scott and Mark Taylor of California, two brothers John Abbate and his wife Irene and Frank Abbate and his wife Barb, all of Erie and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Saint Bruno Catholic Church Friday, July 30 in Whittier, Calif. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
