Sarah and her husband, Jacob, came to Saint John with their family from Minsk, Belarus, via England. Jacob was peddler and a scrap metal dealer. Evidentally, Louis adored his mother, Sarah, who, allegedly, "...when dying, ...said she would like to live a bit longer to see her son's success and to be proud of him...." The chapel, at right, in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, was, in part, a memorial to her.
