Wylie Elmore Crumpton was born on November 3, 1874 in Glasgow, Kentucky, the son of James Thomas "Kentucky" Crumpton (1853–before 1895) and his 1st wife Alice Kate "Allie" (Pace) (Crumpton) Taylor (1857–1923).

He moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1893 and operated a grocery there until he retired in 1936. He was married on February 17, 1912 in Barren County to Florence "Eva" Fishburn (1892–1973), and they were later divorced.

Upon his retirement in 1936, he moved to Butte, Montana, then returned to Nashville in 961.

Living at 914 West Greenwood in Nashville, Tennessee, Wylie was 87 years old and had arteriosclerosis when he died of terminal hypostatic bronchopneumonia on March 25, 1962 at Davidson County Hospital, where he had been for eleven days.

Survivors included sons R E Crumpton, L J Crumpton and A G Crumpton of Nashville, his half-brother J O Crumpton of Indianapolis, Indiana, his half-sister Mrs Clara Watts of Indianapolis, ten grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral Services were held on March 26th at Cosmopolitan Funeral Home, followed with burial in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
