Dorothy Kathleen (Harkness) Martin, 84, Ottawa, passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 17, 2007, at Richmond Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Martin was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Kansas City, Kan., to Robert John and Mary Victoria Rone Harkness. She grew up in the railroad bottoms of Argentine, raised from age 5 by her father and three older brothers after her mother's death. She graduated from Argentine High School in 1940 and entered the University of Kansas as a resident of Watkins Scholarship Hall to study journalism.

At KU, Dorothy met U.S. Army Air Force ROTC officer and KU baseball player Dean Earl Martin, Princeton. With the start of World War II, she changed her major to nursing. She left KU to marry Dean, March 5, 1944, in Eastland, Texas.

Their daughter, Roxanne, was born Nov. 30, 1944, and, in 1946, the family joined the occupation forces in Germany. After returning to the U.S. in 1947, Dean and Dorothy moved to their farm west of Princeton, and son, Fred Robert, was born June 30, 1948. They farmed together and with Fred until Dean's death in January 1990. She continued the farm with Fred until her death.

Dorothy finished her schooling at Ottawa University, earning a bachelor of arts in elementary education in 1958. She taught third and fourth grade in Pomona and at Lincoln and Garfield Schools in Ottawa.

She was a member of Princeton Methodist Church, Ottawa First Methodist Church, and the University of Kansas Alumni Association; was active in the "Kitchen 8" alumni women of Watkins Hall; and was a founding member of the Committee for the Preservation of Watkins and Miller Halls at KU, along with three of her granddaughters who lived in the halls.

In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Ray, Harold, and Glenn; four sisters in childhood; and a step-granddaughter, Kathy Mettenburg Martin.

She is survived by daughter, Roxanne, and son-in-law, Alfred Mettenburg, Princeton; son, Fred, and daughter-in-law, Rhoda Martin, Princeton; granddaughters, Julie Mettenburg, and husband, Peter Burns, Lawrence; Jo Mettenburg, and husband, Jim Zenk, Overland Park; Leslie Mettenburg Moore, and husband, Chris, St. Louis, Mo.; and Brooke Mills, and husband, Justin, Princeton; grandsons, Reuben, Seth, and Caleb Martin, Princeton; and step-grandson, David Mettenburg, and wife, Kathleen, Berryville, Va.; seven great-grandchildren and an eighth on the way. She also is survived by nephew Gordon Harkness, Overland Park, and nieces Donna Tattershall and Susan Regan, Shawnee, and Vicki McGraw, DeSoto.
